According to new research there is a large disconnect between employees and employers when it comes to perceived levels of noise in the workplace.
The survey asked 1,500 employees and almost 500 benefits professionals if they thought their workplace was noisy.
The results showed wildly different perceptions of workplace noise levels. Over 50% of the employees said that for more than an hour a day their workplace was so noisy they had to raise their voices to be heard.
36% responded that they had to deal with a noisy work environment for at least 3 hours each day.
But almost 80% of employers responded that their work environments are almost never noisy.
In addition, about half of the employees expressed concern that all the noise could cause hearing problems and more than half enjoyed getting a break from their noisy work environment.
Even though many employees were concerned about their hearing, less than a quarter of them had their hearing checked during the past 2 years.
Perhaps part of the reason was that almost half of the employees were concerned that their employers would find out they had a hearing loss.
And, many of the employees are still concerned that treating a hearing loss with hearing aids will make them appear old.
